Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)
For the most part, patients fall into one of two categories:
| |
Those who have difficulty breathing (improper function) as well as a cosmetic defect they want to correct. |
Those who have proper function and want it performed for cosmetic purposes only. |
The surgeon must listen to the patient’s expectations and desires for their new nose, but also needs to advice the patient of the best option, since he is the expert and clearly state what can be accomplished without complications, such as removing a nasal hump, shortening a long nose, straightening a crooked nose, refining the tip of the nose, or narrowing an excessively wide nose. He must also discuss the patients facial shape, i.e., what type of face the patient has, and which shape of the nose would look most natural. It's explained that the goal is to achieve a straight, narrow nasal dorsum that reaches further down than the tip of the nose, which should be well-defined; the nose should be centered and with oval-shaped, not overly open nostrils. |
A Surgical Plan is then made based on the patient’s photographs, explaining to him/her what the operation seeks to correct and what results to expect. |
The pro's and con's are both explained, so that he/she is comfortable with the procedure, particularly if the nose is to be completely rebuilt. The nose is definitely not made of wood that can be molded; the work is done with living structures, which have certain limitations. |

The surgery is performed at Dr. Buenrostro’s short-stay clinic, where the patient will remain for 24 hrs. General anesthesia is preferred, since it is better and more comfortable for the patient. The procedure lasts approximately 1-1 1/2 hours. |
It should be noted that surgery is currently performed entirely from within the nose, leaving no visible scars, except when the nose is too wide, and even in this case, the incision is nearly imperceptible. |
We want to reiterate that the patient must be certain of the surgery and fully aware of what the surgeon will do. Pre-op test results must all be in the normal range; x-rays of the nose will be ordered as needed. It is very important to come in on the day of the surgery without having eaten anything and without makeup. Since the patient will stay hospitalized overnight, he/she should have |
someone to pick him/her up and bring comfortable, clothes, preferably some that can be buttoned |
Swelling of the nose and eyelids is to be expected after surgery; it generally subsides after a few days and bruises usually disappear after a week. There may be some discomfort the first few days after surgery, but it can be controlled with medication. |
Cosmetic improvements should be visible at the time the nose dressings are changed, but it will take weeks or even months before final results can be seen. There is minimal, risk involved although not inexistent. |
